It's been a wild week for the Solana Saga smartphone.
It won an award from popular YouTuber… for the worst phone of the year. And it started flying off the shelves… because buyers realized that it came with crypto benefits worth more than the phone's sticker price. And now, according to Solana Labs, some of the smartphone parts sold last week weren't in the first place.
In an “inventory management issue,” Solana Labs announced late Thursday that the company had accidentally oversold the Sagan phone and that an undisclosed number of backlog units were out of stock. Solana Labs says the fault lies with an unnamed third-party distributor.
All affected customers have been notified in advance and will receive refunds in the coming days, the company said.
Decrypt Solana Labs reached out to confirm how many customers were affected by the error, but did not immediately receive a response.

Days later, the phone received the 2023 “Smartphone of the Year” award from tech reviewer and YouTuber Marcus “MKBHD” Brownlee.
“No amount BONK or [Claynosaurz] Can save this phone,” Brownlee wrote to his millions of Twitter followers.
Solana Labs tried to turn the potential embarrassment into a tongue-in-cheek viral moment, adopting the designation and referring to itself as an “award-winning” phone in subsequent marketing materials.
The company went so far as to ask Brownlee to send the “Bust of the Year” trophy to their office, and Solana's project 3.land created a “Saga: Bust of the Year” NFT set inspired by the award. near $3 million worth of Solana NFTs It traded following a free mint on Wednesday.
But some disappointed Saga buyers who still haven't received their phones weren't laughing this week. Others took the opportunity to reminisce about the situation.
