Pump.fun, a popular Solana-based token launchpad, said Monday that it has “discontinued” its live streaming feature on its platform, which allowed users to post a video feed alongside generating meme coins.
Tokens that have used the live streaming feature cannot be found in categories using the drop-down menu on the Pump.fun home page and the video feed will not be included on their respective Pump.fun pages. After the feature was removed, the company confirmed that it was removed for public safety.
“To ensure the absolute safety of our users, we will suspend the live streaming functionality of the site indefinitely while the media infrastructure is ready to handle the increased activity levels,” the Pump team said in a statement.
The feature has sparked controversy and concern across the crypto community, with live streams calling for the feature to be shut down over the past few days, with content ranging from animal cruelty to intended self-harm. Some celebrities in the space have indicated that they will no longer use the platform if the behavior continues.
Fake Pump.Fun co-founder Alon previously raised “legitimate concerns” over live content on Nov. 22, warning the community via Twitter (his X) that “while we stand by speech and expression, it's our responsibility to make sure users give it to us. I clearly don't see offensive/dangerous content.” And bad actors are not given a platform to act as they please.
The platform uses a group of content moderators to control illegal content on the site, including “images, videos, live streams and comments.”
Pump.fun previously protested the release of its video feature, which allowed users to create meme coins using a video or GIF file.
Pump.fun is the largest token launchpad on Solana, averaging over 50,000 new coins in the last week. In 2024, it helped fuel the boom in meme coins, with several tokens from the platform briefly reaching the top 100 coins by market capitalization.
