Sony's "Entertainment Network", Soneum, goes live

Sony launched a Layer 2 network on top of Ethereum to create an entertainment layer on top of Web3's financial layer. The network is open to all creators and protects creator rights by ensuring a fair distribution of value between creators and users.

Sony, the media and entertainment giant, has launched Sonium, a Layer 2 network on Ethereum through Sony Blockchain Solutions Labs. The network is intended to leverage Web3 technology to power the digital creative economy.

Built using the OP stack (blockchain development kit from the Optimism Foundation), the network uses chain abstraction technologies and methods without requiring regular users to understand the underlying Web 3 technology.

Another important touch point for Sony BSL head Sota Watanabe is the protection of IP rights. Soneum is built with mechanisms in place to protect these rights.

According to Watanabe's X post, “We're making a home for all creators inside and outside of Web 3. Memecoins are an important culture, I like it too, but it's not IP infringement. Let's create a meme culture that doesn't violate IP rights!”

Unlike other major consumer brands whose involvement with Web3 is largely limited to NFTs, Sony is moving to provide the infrastructure for the next generation of creative economy growth.

Sonem also launched an incubator program called Spark, which selected 32 projects out of 1,700 projects to be launched on the new network.

Although Soneum recently launched its mainnet, it has logged more than 14 million users in its testnet phase, which lasted four months from August 2024 and saw more than 50 million transactions.
