As AI companies compete for market dominance, a tech giant led by IBM and Meta have formed a new organization, the AI Alliance, to work together instead of against each other. The companies announced Tuesday a goal to support open innovation and responsible development in artificial intelligence.
The AI Alliance aims to prioritize security, collaboration, diversity, economic opportunity and benefit for all, IBM and Meta said in a joint statement. According to the association, the group represents more than $80 billion in annual research and development funding.
And while many members support open source development, the model is not a requirement for membership.
“The AI Alliance brings together researchers, developers and companies to share tools and knowledge to help us all make progress, whether they openly share models or not,” said Meta's Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs. “We look forward to working with partners to advance the state of the art in AI and help everyone build responsibly.”
Joining IBM and Meta in the AI Alliance are more than 50 technology companies, including AMD, Dell Technologies, Red Hat, Sony Group, Hugging Face, Stability AI, Oracle and the Linux Foundation.
“The continued progress we're witnessing in AI is a testament to unlocking innovation and collaboration across communities of innovators, scientists, academics and business leaders,” added IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna. “This is a critical time to define the future of AI.”
The AI Alliance, IBM and Meta explained, will establish a governing board and technical oversight committee to advance AI projects and establish standards and guidelines in collaboration with governments, non-profits and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the AI industry. .
Seeking to engage the academic community, the AI Alliance also includes several academic and research institutions including CERN, NASA, Cleveland Clinic, Cornell University, Dartmouth, Imperial College London, University of California Berkeley, University of Illinois, University of Notre Dame. University of Tokyo and Yale University.
“Open innovation is critical to ensuring equitable access and collaboration around AI, and to grounding this technology on principles that respect the strongest standards of diversity, trust and ingenuity,” said Kevin Murphy, NASA's science information officer.
Meta has championed open source AI models and responsible development, but in November the company fired its responsible AI team in a move to decentralize and streamline AI development.
AI developers not specifically from the AI Alliance, including Microsoft, Google, ChatGPT developer OpenAI and Claude AI's Anthropic, announced in July the launch of their own group dedicated to responsible AI, The Frontier Forum.
Earlier this year, the Biden administration met with major AI developers to commit to responsible development of artificial intelligence, including OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Anthroponic, Meta, and Inflection. In September, NVIDIA, IBM, Scale AI, Adobe, IBM, Palantir, Salesforce and Stability AI signed on to the pledge.
