Telegram's billionaire founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested at Le Bourget airport near Paris on Saturday, local media reported. Durov, who was arriving in his private jet from Tehran, was detained by local authorities. The investigation against him focused on the lack of Telegram moderators, and law enforcement agencies that this allowed the development of criminal activities on the platform.

Telegram, known for its strong encryption, has repeatedly rejected government requests for a backdoor key, citing concerns about user privacy. Following Durov's arrest, Telegram's Token token fell as much as 18% before stabilizing slightly. At the time of writing, the ton is trading at just over $5.71, down 14% in the last few hours.

The team behind the TON blockchain responded to the news by assuring the community that the network is fully operational. “Despite the recent changes regarding Telegram founder Pavel Durov, the Ton community is strong and fully functional,” they posted on X.

According to Sputnik, Durov is due to appear in court on Saturday night on serious charges. French media said he could face up to 20 years in prison. The charges relate to Telegram's lack of content moderation and Durov's failure to cooperate with French authorities.

Telegram was created by Durov and his brother Nikolai, a programmer. With nearly 900 million active users, it is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world. But its moderation of light content has led to accusations that it is often used for criminal activities and the spread of extremist material.

It's also grown with community contributors and integration into Telegram. This has increased the ton price by over 300% over the past year. However, this relationship has now resulted in lower tonnage prices.
