Test 'was great' — ETH devs to prepare for Dunk's hard fork day Thursday

Ethereum developers plan to set a mainnet launch date for Thursday for the Denkun upgrade — which will introduce several EIPs, including proto-Dunk sharding, which is expected to reduce transaction costs at Layer-2s.

On February 1st on Reddit, Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko highlighted the key details of the recent update test “that went really well” and the All Developer Execution (ACDE) 180 call, where Ethereum developers drew attention to the recent success of the Sepolia fork on January 30th as well as the upcoming Holeski Testnet update on February 7.

The update follows last year's Chapela update, which will be implemented on the Ethereum mainnet on April 12, 2023. The upgrade allowed Ethereum to take off and was seen as an important upgrade to get more institutional investors on board to Ethereum.

“Assuming everything looks good by then, we'll be picking up the main net fork time at ACDC next week. [All Core Developers Call]” said Beiko. The next ACDC call is scheduled for the end of next week.

Kristen Kim, vice president of research at Galaxy Digital, put the probability of Denkun's mainnet activation at the end of March at 80%. It is close to 40%.

An update to the Denkun network was activated on the Gorley testnet on January 17, introducing several EEPs, including EIP-4844, which enables proto-Dunk sharding, a highly anticipated update that developers say will significantly reduce transaction fees on Ethereum Layer-2s.

Proto-dunk sharding aims to reduce the cost of packages, which typically collect transactions and data off-chain and provide computational evidence to the Ethereum blockchain. By introducing a new distributed container called “blobs”, data storage is made cheaper.
