In response to speculation that a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) would be approved, one Bitcoin user decided to commemorate the occasion by writing to the blockchain. On January 9 at 7:24 PM UTC, the transaction was confirmed in a text, “SEC Chairman on Second ETF Approval.”

The commemoration features Bitcoin's anonymous inventor Satoshi Nakamoto's text, “Chancellor on the brink of second demonetization for banks,” in the first block of Bitcoin. In both cases, the text is entered in the transaction's OP_RETURN field, which is preserved for as long as the Bitcoin blockchain exists.

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission has yet to approve a single Bitcoin (BTC) ETF. However, it approved the first Bitcoin Futures ETF in October 2021, which may be the reason why the author of the January 9th post referred to it as “on the brink” rather than the first. The word “second” could only have been inserted to match Satoshi's original.

A few hours before the message was posted, the SEC's X label released a message announcing the approval of Bitcoin ETFs everywhere. SEC Chairman Gary Gensler quickly posted a message contradicting the news, saying the regulator's account had been compromised, which turned out to be false. Three US senators have asked Gensler to report on how the hacking was authorized.
