The General AI report highlights the risks of job loss in entertainment
Generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) will cause more job losses in the film and animation industry than in any other sector, according to CVL Economics, a consulting firm.
In the year In a January 2024 survey of 300 executives, c-suite executives, senior executives and mid-level managers from six entertainment industries between November 17 and December 22, 2023, the organization found a 75% response rate. Respondents indicated that general AI tools, software and models have supported the elimination, reduction or consolidation of tasks in their departments.
Gen AI creates a variety of content such as images, text and music without any explicit programming. It uses machine learning to understand and replicate patterns from existing data.
According to the report, 55% of leaders expect that sound designers will suffer the most in the next three years. More than 40% see music editors, audio technicians and sound engineers as vulnerable, with around 33% expecting songwriters, composers and studio engineers to be affected.
In July 2023, shortly after ChatGPT's launch, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) announced a strike over advances in AI that could affect job roles and security.
Before the strike, several companies used content from writers to train generic AI programs and create digital replicas and characters based on an actor's image. Without strong safeguards, auditors fear their roles could be replaced by AI technology.

Despite recent favorable contract negotiations with Motion Picture and Television Producers, concerns remain among WGA and SAG-AFTRA members about the impact of AI on the film and television industry and other entertainment sectors.
The report found that 47% of business leaders believe Gen AI will successfully generate 3D assets and realistic sound design for film, television and video games within the next three years.
Another 44% believe Gen AI will be able to generate realistic and convincing foreign language presentations in film or television dialogue, and 39% believe Gen AI will generate music mixes and masters by 2026.
However, with companies such as Riot Games, Unity Software, Amazon MGM Studios, Pixar and Universal Music Group already announcing layoffs in the first few weeks of 2024, CVL Economics said more job cuts are expected in the coming months.
