Artificial intelligence has been tapped to help Roblox users communicate better with each other, the online gaming and building platform said on Monday.
“Imagine when you find out that your new Roblox friend, the person you've been chatting and joking with… is actually in Korea and typing in English the whole time, without either of you noticing. ,” the company said.
AI integration allows users to communicate in more than 16 languages in real time using the standard Roblox chat window. The languages the AI can translate into include Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, English, Russian and Spanish.
These mean, according to Roblox, a delay time of 100 milliseconds.
“Thanks to our new real-time AI chat translations, we've made something impossible even in the physical world on Roblox: enabling people who speak different languages to communicate with each other through our amazing 3D experiences,” the announcement screamed.
The addition of the AI translator, Roblox added, has led to stronger engagement and better session quality.
“Using AI to automate real-time translations in text chat will break down language barriers and bring people closer together, no matter where they live in the world,” Roblox said.
While the platform can translate more than a dozen languages, Roblox admits that translating less common pairs like French to Thai may be problematic due to the lack of high-quality data for the training model.
“To address this gap, we implemented back-translation, where the content is translated into the original language, then compared to the source text for accuracy,” Roblox said.
Roblox did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Decrypt.
Other game developers, including Blizzard Entertainment, Square Enix and Ubisoft, have joined Roblox in investing heavily in artificial intelligence.
Last summer, on its quarterly earnings call, Roblox founder and CEO David Bazuki said the company is using generative AI to create more dynamic games.
“We're entering an exciting new season on the stage,” Bazuki said. “Eventually we'll put it on Roblox where anyone can make their avatar or outfit 100% via text message. So if you or I want to make an outfit, we can just say it. See what happens in real time.”
