The next big crypto court cases with the SBF saga are here.


A week ago, FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Later this month, Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao will know what jail time, if any, he will serve.

Bankman-Fried may appeal the sentence at some point, according to his attorneys since his guilty plea last November. In the year The 25-year sentence he was sentenced to on March 28 now allows him to do so.

Here are other cases where crypto and its CEOs face US courts.

Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao

Former Binance boss Zhao pleaded guilty to money laundering last year for Binance.US and Binance's $4.3 billion deal with the US for money laundering and an ineffective anti-money laundering program.

He faces up to 18 months in prison at an April 30 sentencing in federal court in Seattle, but prosecutors have made it clear they could argue for up to 10 years.

Zhao's bond status has kept him in the United States, as he fears he will not return to his family home in the United Arab Emirates.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is still pursuing charges against Binance, its US arm and Zhao for allegedly selling unregistered securities and commingling client assets.

FTX execs and additional court for SBF

FTX co-founder Zixiao “Gary” Wang, head of engineering Nishad Singh and former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison will be sentenced at a later date for their roles in the massive fraud in New York.

Wang, Singh and Ellison face up to 50, 75 and 110 years in prison, respectively, but may not receive as much prison time as their predecessors because of reduced sentences for pleading guilty and testifying against him.

Ryan Salame, the former CEO of FTX Digital Markets — who did not testify against Bankman-Fried but took a plea deal — pleaded guilty on May 1 to making illegal political contributions and conspiracy to commit unauthorized wire transfers. Business.

With Bankman-Fried's criminal trial now over, the SEC and Commodity Futures Trading Commission's pending charges of violating securities and commodities laws are expected to resume soon.

Terraform Labs' Do Kwon

In March last year, the US indicted Terraform founder Do Kwon on charges of fraud and market manipulation.

The U.S. is fighting Kwon's native South Korea to extradite him from Montenegro. Kwon won an appeal to stop his extradition to the US and is free in Montenegro while the Supreme Court hears extradition requests from the US and South Korea.

The SEC brought charges against Kwon in New York federal court for selling unregistered securities, and that went to trial in his absence.

“Highly profitable business” strategist Avi Eisenberg

Avraham “Avi” Eisenberg, accused of exploiting the $117 million DeFi protocol Mango Market as a “very profitable business strategy,” awaits trial on April 8 on charges of commodity fraud, fraud and wire fraud.

Eisenberg said everything he did on Mango Markets' smart contract was legal and authorized.

The CFTC and SEC have filed charges against him on market manipulation and anti-fraud charges, but they are on hold pending the conclusion of the criminal trial.

Tornado Cash Roman Hurricane and Semenov

Crypto mixer Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm has been charged with conspiring to launder money, operating an unauthorized money-transmitting business and violating the International Economic Emergency Powers Act.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 45 years in prison, and Storm has pleaded not guilty and asked that it be dismissed because there is little that can be done to prevent US-authorized parties from using the device.

His co-developer, Roman Semenov, is at a high level and is believed to be based in Russia.

Alex Mashinsky, founder and former CEO of Celsius

Alex Mashinsky, the founder of bankrupt crypto lender Celsius, is set to go on trial for September 17 on seven counts of fraud and market manipulation. This is a total of 115 years in prison.

He pleaded not guilty and asked that the two counts be dismissed and that Celsius' bankruptcy information be excluded from the case.

Mashinsky also faces charges from the SEC and CFTC — pending criminal charges — that he sold unregistered securities and operated an unregistered commodity pool.

SafeMoon Chief Karony

U.S. prosecutors indicted Safe Moon CEO Braden John Caronin in November on securities, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges — a maximum of 45 years in prison.

Not guilty, out on bail and having difficulty paying for legal services.

SafeMoon founder Kyle Nagy and chief technology officer Thomas Smith are also indicted along with Caroni. Nagy is still at it and Smith is eager for a plea deal.

After their convictions, Caroni, Smith and Nagy face SEC charges of misappropriation of unregistered securities sales and funds.

KuCoin and co.

Last month, the US indicted crypto exchange KuCoin and its founders Chun “Michael” Gan and Ke “Eric” Tang for failing to maintain an anti-money laundering program and conspiring to conduct an unauthorized money transfer business.

Gan and Tang – both Chinese citizens – each face a maximum of ten years in prison, but both are at large.

The CFTC also charged KuCoin with “numerous violations of the Commodity Markets Act.”

SEC from (almost) everyone

In addition to the aforementioned SEC charges, the agency is suing no less than eight other crypto firms – alleging that they sold unregistered securities and operated without a license.

Coinbase, Kraken, Tron, and Gemini are facing the regulator in court – all for selling unregistered securities, among other charges, and all are fighting SEC allegations.

Ripple has been embroiled in a years-long court battle with the regulator, though that will soon end.

The SEC also sued crypto mining and development firm Green United on similar grounds, which the mining company requested be dismissed.
