The US Department of Agriculture has approved a blockchain-based certification system
Decentralized cow verification service CattleProof's “Verified” has become the United States Department of Agriculture's first blockchain-based process verification program.
CattleProof, a Wyoming-based company, uses a decentralized digital ledger to record information related to individual cows. Its technology links information sent from electronic tags attached to individual animals about their condition, location and other characteristics into an immutable blockchain record.
According to the company's post, CattleProof has the distinction of being the first US company to receive USDA approval as a Process Verified Program (PVP) to plant cows on the blockchain.
Process proven program
The USDA PVP service exists when a company like CattleProof needs to ignite a new regulatory environment to market its products.
As the first organization to build a decentralized network to monitor the condition of cattle requiring regulatory guidance, the PVP system allows CattleProof to develop and submit voluntary standards for government review.
According to CattleProof, the digital ledger, also known as blockchain, is the only PVP approved by the USDA. The company says it's the only USDA PVP service integrated with Heartland Payments to “Born in the USA” for cattle certification, digital certificates with hyperlinks to personal animal information, and “to buy and sell USDA certified cattle live.”

The successful adoption of the CattleProof application shows that it meets the regulatory standards in the sector and has implemented processes to ensure that the block chain and the agricultural industry are interconnected.
The USDA appears to be embracing blockchain as a foundational technology in the agricultural world.
As Cointelegraph recently reported, the department recently proposed to revise the regulations on organic products by applying blockchain technology to track supply chains.
