The World Announced A New Layer-2 Network 'World Chain'

The Sam Altman-founded “Proof of Humanity” project World – a spin-off from WorldCoin – has dubbed Ethereum's Layer-2 blockchain WorldChain.

In a statement on Oct. 17, it said 15 million users who have verified their identity by scanning their irises for “World ID” can now use the network.

As the company seeks to expand its onboarding efforts, it launched WorldChain to improve efficiency and introduce new functionality to users of the Worldcoin (WLD) token.

World says the new blockchain will allow authenticated human users — those with World IDs — to reserve space ahead of bots and be granted free gas allowances.

The World will also feature blockchain-advanced applications and projects, he said; These include Optimism for interoperability, Uniswap for asset swaps, Zerion for real-time APIs, and Alchemy for development, among others.

The world first announced the Global Chain in April, as the network strengthened its “human-centric” approach to spreading crypto adoption. Alongside the opening of WorldChain, World has rebranded and unveiled a new version of the “Orb” – a chrome sphere-shaped biometric device that the company uses to scan people's eyeballs.

The company unveiled new options for authentication and working with social media apps FaceTime, WhatsApp and Zoom.

Powered by NVIDIA hardware, the new Orb will be more efficient than its predecessor and “five times” more powerful, with a smaller footprint and fewer components, the company said.

World launched in July 2023 out of beta. It was founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, current CEO Alex Blenia, and Max Novendstern, who also serves as CEO of biometrics research firm Mana.

The crypto-based digital identity project markets itself as a solution to identity issues fueled by rapid growth in AI. World also stated that it aims to bring a new universal basic income model with the WLD token.

Users scan their irises with an Orb device and register a unique ID with the company's “World App.” Once users have verified themselves on the Orb, they can opt-in to be allocated free WLD tokens.

The WLD token appeared unaffected by the World New Network announcement, with its price down 2.1% on the day, according to CoinGecko.
