The Tone Association has asked France to release Telegram Pavel Durov
The Open Network (TON) Association has issued an open letter to the French authorities on behalf of the TON community. They called for the immediate release of Telegram founder Pavel Durov, who was arrested at Le Bourget airport on August 24.
The letter condemned Durov's arrest as a “direct attack on basic human rights” and a violation of the principles of freedom of speech. The Ton Society has called on international bodies such as the Council of Europe and the European Union to intervene on Durov's behalf.
It should be noted that the European Court of Human Rights unanimously confirmed its ruling in the Podchasov v. Russia case that ‘encryption measures contribute to ensuring the enjoyment of other fundamental rights, such as the right to freedom of expression. ” read the letter.
In addition, the Tone Society urged social media and technology companies to oppose government censorship and data blocking. It also emphasizes that Telegram's content editing complies with EU regulations, including the Digital Services Act.
In response to growing criticism from the crypto community and free-speech activists, French President Emmanuel Macron said Durov's arrest was not politically motivated, but his response prompted further backlash.
