Former President Donald Trump has been targeted by gunfire at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred shortly after Trump began to speak and immediate security measures were taken. Following the news, Crypto markets saw a surge in activity.
Several shots rang out at the outdoor event, which Trump's security detail quickly surrounded. Armed officers took protective positions as Trump stood in front of the stage. The US Secret Service then escorted Trump to a waiting vehicle.
As he was removed from the venue, Trump repeatedly raised his hand to the crowd and shouted that he was harmless. However, images later appeared on social media showing Trump with blood on his right ear and on the right side of his face. CNN reported that Trump was injured, but did not provide any further information on their nature or severity.
Following the event, crypto markets saw significant price action. The Solana memecoin TRUMP (MAGA) surged 42% within minutes of the news. Bitcoin also broke above the $59,000 mark. This market reaction highlights the increasing intersection between political and economic events and crypto price movements.
The shot comes amid Trump's recent embrace as part of his 2024 presidential campaign, with major crypto companies and individuals pledging their support.
In particular, not everyone in crypto supports Trump, who has just been convicted. BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes recently published Trump's pandering to crypto, drawing mistrust from Malcolm X's comments in the 1964 US presidential race and showing that politicians only support issues and topics based on their chances of getting votes.
“Like Malcolm in 1964, I question Trump's sincerity. He cares about getting elected and will say whatever it takes to get your vote. If Biden and the Democrats were pro-crypto, Trump would be anti-crypto. It's just good politics,” Hayes said.
Trump has promised to ease crypto regulations if he is re-elected and the Republican National Committee adopts a pro-crypto platform. Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump confirmed his participation as a speaker at the Bitcoin conference in Nashville, emphasizing his support for the crypto industry.
This phenomenon could further boost support among crypto-loving voters, as well as heighten security concerns in the increasingly political context of the election season.
