Unsolicited emails from Patreon?  Crypto users say this could be a phishing scam



Crypto users on social media have sounded the alarm over crypto-themed phishing emails – apparently sent from content creator platform Patreon.

According to reports on social media platforms X and Reddit, scammers were getting their email addresses from crypto users Patreon and then registering them with malicious emails of fake crypto projects on the platform.

Reports of the phishing attack began appearing on January 23, with users reporting receiving fake weather offers from Patreon creators Chainlink (LINK), Solana (SOL), Manta Network (MANTA) and Sui (SUI).

Patreon Support told a member of the crypto community on January 25th that they had identified and resolved the issue, which involved “email verification and tracking from a crypto account claiming to be a fake Patreon creator.” Affected accounts are being processed.

A screenshot of the email from Patreon also sheds more light, explaining that the scam emails were sent as part of a “maliciously coordinated attempt” to access users' cryptocurrency wallets, and that the issue has been “fixed.”

However, many other X users continue to report receiving scam emails in the past 4 days.

“I deleted 6 Patreon emails today, all talking about the ‘manta' airdrop,” said “PhaseEquivalent3529” in the “CryptoCurrency” thread on Reddit on January 28th.

“Clearly the extra protections are working well,” said “fdlowe” in the same thread.

Cointelegraph reached out to Patreon for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
