US AI security alliance revealed with big names in technology
The US Department of Commerce announced the creation of the AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC) on February 8, complete with a long list of participants from all corners of the tech industry.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said the consortium aims to “unite AI creators and users, academics, government and industry researchers, and civil society organizations” to create a safe and secure artificial intelligence environment.
“The U.S. government has an important role to play in setting the standards and developing the tools we need to address risks and harness artificial intelligence. President Biden has directed us to pull together every regulator to achieve two key goals: set safety standards and protect our innovation ecosystem.”
AISIC is responsible for developing guidelines for the Red-Team, assessing AI capabilities, risk management, safety and security and watermarking artificial content – the latter being a key issue.
The consortium consists of more than 200 members, including some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Microsoft, Google, Meta, Apple, OpenAI, Anthroponic, Adobe, NVIDIA, GitHub, Frontier Model Forum, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and many more.
According to the announcement, this represents the largest testing and evaluation group ever established for the industry's standards, along with state and local governments, nonprofit organizations, and “like-minded nations.”

This development follows the creation of the US AI Safety Institute (USAISI), which was established in late October 2023 as a result of President Joe Biden's executive order on AI safety.
Raimondo said Biden's executive order “reassures us” that the US remains at the “head of the pack” in deploying and deploying safe and responsible AI.
White House deputy chief of staff Bruce Reid said tracking AI means:
“We need to move quickly and make sure that everyone – from government to the private sector to academia – is rowing in the same direction.”
Reid recently convened the White House AI Council on January 30 to hear reports on how actions from the executive order have been implemented. This resulted in an updated fact sheet showing that the US “has met or exceeded many of the criteria set forth in the executive order for the first three months.”
