Vitalik Buterin Backs Tornado Cash Devs With $113K Donation
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to privacy in the cryptocurrency sector by donating 30 ETH worth approximately $113,000 to Tornado Cash developers Alexey Persev and Roman Storm's legal defense fund.

According to Eterscan data, Buterin donated to the “Free Perceive and Storm” defense fund on May 30 on the decentralized fundraising platform Juicebox. As of this writing, the fund has accumulated 591 ETH and $2.2 million to support the developers' legal battles.
Perceive and Tornado have faced serious legal challenges for their involvement with TornadoCash, a crypto privacy protocol. A Dutch court sentenced Percev to 64 months in prison for funneling $1.2 billion in Tornado cash between July 2019 and August 2022. He appealed the verdict at the Hertogenbosch Court of Appeal in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Storm has been jailed in the US since 2023, with his trial scheduled for September.
Vitalik Buterin has consistently advocated for privacy in the crypto space. He has published several papers and opinion pieces on improving privacy on Ethereum, bolstering support for tools such as Tornado Cash. In a recent fireside chat, Buterin reiterated his views on privacy.
“I support people working on privacy issues. I hope things are moving in a positive direction in the ecosystem. And you know, I also hope that governments will see the value of this,” Buterin explained.
