Vitalik Buterin says AI coding can help Ethereum’s roadmap.

Vitalik Buterin says AI coding still has “huge caveats,” but people should expect the Ethereum map to be completed sooner than expected.

Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum, said that an experiment that used artificial intelligence to type the blockchain's road map to 2030 in a few weeks could have lessons for developers.

“This is an amazing experiment. Coding the entire 2030 roadmap in weeks,” Buterin posted on X on Saturday, after a developer toyed with Buterin in February that one could use AI to implement a blockchain roadmap.

Buterin added that AI is “drastically speeding up coding” and that people “should be open to the completion of the Ethereum roadmap faster than people expect, with a much higher level of security than people expect.”

Vibe coding is where AI generates the application code and allows developers to create software faster. As AI models have improved on code, the practice has become more popular; However, some warn that AI-generated code may be unsafe.

Buterin said AI code will have “critical errors”.

He said there were “huge caveats” to using the AI, as the speed at which the code was written meant it had many critical errors and, in some cases, “stem” versions of something the AI hadn't even tried to make a full copy of.

“But six months ago, even this was far from possible, and the main thing is where the trend is going,” he said.

Buterin warned that instead of focusing on speed, he should focus more on safety.

The right way to use it is to get half of what you get from AI in speed and half in security: generating lots of test cases, validating everything regularly, doing lots of implementations of things.

He says he's personally excited that error-free code, “long considered a conceptual mess,” will finally be possible first and “then a fundamental safeguard.”

Buterin actively commented on the recently released roadmap from the Ethereum Foundation, “Strawmap”, which lists all the improvements planned for the next four years.

He has previously proposed plans to make Ethereum quantum-resistant and on Sunday said the escrow, or smart account, “will happen within a year.”
