Vitalik Buterin thinks that AI can surpass humans, the community responds
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin's blog post highlighted the potential threat artificial intelligence (AI) poses to humanity and drew a lot of fiery responses from members of the AI and blockchain community.
On November 27, Buterin published a blog post titled My Techno-Brightness, in which he discussed how AI is “fundamentally different” from other inventions such as guns, airplanes, and social media. He also stated that Buterin could develop a new “mind” that could work on humans and become the new super-species.
The blog post attracted discussions on various fronts and sparked mixed reactions on X (formerly Twitter). Some expressed their agreement with the Ethereum founder, while others shared their criticism of the post.
Emergent Perspectives, an X-label focused on Internet-age phenomena, responded in a blog post that they agreed with Buterin's sentiments. According to the user of X, positive intentions are guaranteed by those who argue that AI “can't hurt them”. “This has never been truer in human history,” he added. And this wouldn't be the first time.
I'm with @VitalikButerin on this one.
The only people who scare me about their comments on #AI are the ones who say “Positive intent = guarantee AI is harmless”.
Never in human history has this been true, and this will not be the first exception. https://t.co/BVGwPjIbMg

Another X user expressed other concerns about AI. A community member who goes by “Wei Dai” on X says that one of his concerns is that AI can undermine defense, decentralization and democracy by nature. According to the user, AI can accelerate the “wrong intellectual fields”, and people's push against it may not be enough.

Not everyone agreed with Buterin's sentiments. Another member of the community criticized Buterin, saying that tech specialists like Buterin “seem completely ignorant or immature” to human psychology. A community member argued that the motivation behind building “morally impoverished” human practices is always money. The user of X urged the community to understand both things and people and not only one or the other.
The problem with Vitalik's post imo: he has a preconceived idea of 'human values' but I don't think those are the priority, he believes that the values come after the technology.

Meanwhile, a community member argued on X that one of the problems with the blog post is the preconceived notion of Buterin's human value. The community member explained that these should not be predetermined and should come after the technology.
While many expressed their agreement and disagreement, others simply sat on the fence, waiting for humanity to join in the collective effort to find the answer.
