Vitalik Buterin wants rolls to hit level 1 decentralization at the end of the year

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed raising the stakes in the Ethereum ecosystem — and suggests that developers should plan to get their decentralized efforts in order by the end of the year.

The comments were made in a blog post on the 28th, reflecting on the coming year following Ethereum's latest Denkun update, which significantly reduced transaction fees for sending on Layer 2.

Buterin explained that Ethereum was in a “critical transition” from “an era of very rapid L1 progress” to one where L1 progress is still very important.

He also said that Ethereum's expansion efforts have moved from a “zero-one” problem to an increasing problem, as further expansion efforts will focus on increasing blob capacity and improving the efficiency of mining.

He stated that the standards of the ecosystem should be stricter:

“By the end of the year, I think our standards should increase and we'll only consider a project if it's actually at least level 1.”

Level 1 is Buterin's development of layer-2 decentralization, whereby the network is sufficiently advanced in terms of security and scalability yet still fully decentralized (it becomes level 2).

He noted that only five of the Layer-2 projects listed on L2beat are at Level 1 or 2, and only Arbitrum is fully EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatible.

Next steps on the roadmap include implementing data availability sampling to increase blob capacity to 16 MB per location, leveraging Layer 2 solutions such as data compression, optimized performance, and improved security.

“After this we can move cautiously to step 2: births are a truly coded world and the Security Council can only intervene if the code “really doesn't agree with itself,” he added.

Buterin says additional changes such as verclature trees, single-slot finality, and label abstraction are still important, “but they're not as drastic as share and partition proof.”

In 2022, Ethereum would be like an airplane that replaces its engine mid-flight. In the year It would replace the wing in 2023. “

Ethereum is currently in “The Surge” phase of its development roadmap with improvements related to the expansion of bundles and data sharing. The next phase, “The scurge,” will have improvements related to MEV, including censorship resistance, decentralization, and protocol risks.

Developers should design applications with a “2020s Ethereum” mindset, embracing layer-2 scalability, privacy, token abstraction and new community membership verifications, he said before concluding:

“Ethereum has evolved from being ‘just' a financial ecosystem to a more deeply independent and decentralized technology stack.
