Web3 games must be ‘fun and engaging’ to be sustainable – OKX exec
As the blockchain gaming ecosystem continues to develop, companies are trying to take advantage of the momentum by creating partnerships to bring more players on board and introduce them to the Web3 world.
On March 8, Immutable announced that it had landed 75 Web3 games in the past three months. This brings the total number of blockchain-based games on Immutable to 270.
Crypto exchange OKX, a booming gaming ecosystem, has capitalized and moved into Web3 gaming with Immutable.
Jason Lau, chief innovation officer of crypto exchange OKX, said the exchange has partnered with Immutable to further expand the Web3 gaming ecosystem.
Lau told Cointelegraph that Web3 has a lot to offer to improve the player experience, including enabling real ownership and in-game “car innovation.”
Web3 explained that it allows players to play, trade and acquire assets in-game, enhancing the experience. It also “encourages unique game mechanics, business models and community engagement,” he said.
According to Lau, OKX and Immutable are working on a GameFi launchpad, which could keep Web3 game adoption moving forward. The launchpad supports game launch on the Immutable Zero Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) chain.
When asked how the crypto community will benefit from the partnership, Lau said it will help improve the availability of the upcoming launch pad and improve accessibility to upcoming Web3 games, experiences and assets.
Games that open on the immutable chain can access OKX solutions, a marketplace for exchange, wallet and immutable tokens.
In addition, the OKX Wallet service integrates with Immutable Passport, a login method developed by Web3 Game Publisher for games in the ecosystem.
While the two firms provide equipment to Web3 gaming firms, Lau believes blockchain gaming companies have a role to play in bringing passengers to Web3. He urged game projects to prioritize making game mechanics unique. Lau explained:
“Games must be of high quality to attract and build a fun, engaging and sustainable community. We hope to see games break out of the current web2 game mold by experimenting with what makes web3 unique.”
Lau also suggested that blockchain game organizations should focus on developing their communities around each game. The executive said that in addition to promoting games, game companies should educate players on the benefits of Web3.

Immutable Web3 Gaming is improving the gaming ecosystem by adding features that make it easier for players. On December 13, 2023, blockchain platform zkEVM announced its proprietary zero-knowledge proof-of-stake platform. This allows game developers to avoid gas fees for users, allowing for a more “frictionless” onboarding experience for Web3 players.
Immutable launched its Passport Wallet infrastructure on December 19. The feature allows users to create and restore wallets using a Google or Apple account. The service aims to help Web3 players by making account management more convenient for players.
