Web3 Needs An Additional Layer 2S - Polygon Founder

On episode 48 of Cointelegraph's Hashing It Out podcast, Polygon founder Brendan Farmer joins Elsha Osu Akiau to discuss the state of Layer-2 networks, Polygon's many releases over the past six months, including the Aggregation Layer, or AggLayer, and the new A “type 1 paradigm” is introduced.

“Type 1 prover” is a new feature that allows any Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) network to become a layer-2 network powered by zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) and connect to Polygon's wider ecosystem. .

According to Farmer, the technology, which took about a year to build, was developed with the help of Toposware and enabled the generation of ZK proofs for major Ethereum blocks at a low cost. Type 1 prover allows any EVM chain to be ZK layer-2 and join Polygon AggLayer. Farmer explained that a better user experience is needed to bring together the fragmented layer-2 ecosystem to make Ethereum the ecosystem of choice for the next wave of adoption.

“When you look at the success Solana has had over the last year, they provide a great user experience, and that's because they provide a single environment, you don't have to be overwhelmed, you don't have to. Make your users think about what package they're on, and if Ethereum is going to succeed, it can't be a fragmented L2 ecosystem.”

Despite identifying the diversity of layer-2 ecosystems, farmers argue that there are not enough layer-2 networks. He explains that Layer 2s of the Web3 space are needed to provide enough capacity for an Internet-scale crypto ecosystem to accommodate the highest level of adoption.

Hashing It Out host Elisha Owusu asks how Polygon plans to compete with the growing ecosystem of layer-2 networking architectures, such as the OP Stack by Optimisim, the ZK Stack by zkSync, and the Polygon Chain Development Kit.

The farmer explains that Polygon plans to create a network effect around Aglier. Agg says that if Layer is a shortcut for liquidity and users, more developers will be able to build on Polygon. Farmers added that the network will provide a superior user and developer experience without restrictions such as revenue sharing.
