The removal of support images for the non-tethered token (NFT) on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked discussions among community members about what the move means for the NFT space.

On January 10, X withdrew support for NFTs a year after it was planned. The platform implemented the feature on January 20, 2022, allowing paid subscribers to link their NFTs to their Twitter profile pictures. This changes their profile picture to a hexagonal shape and provides a means of verifying that the picture is an NFT.

Many reacted to the removal of NFT profile pictures, with some arguing that it was too difficult to identify fake accounts, while others speculated that it might be a move to sell Special X NFTs in the future.

An NFT holder on X raised the issue of fake accounts. The NFT proponent argued that removing NFT profile photos would make it more difficult to identify fraudulent and impersonated accounts. As if we don't have enough problems with fake accounts and scams on Crypto Twitter.

Another X user described the move as “another black eye” for the industry. A community member raised the issue of fake accounts and NFT profile pictures allowed users to make sure the person they were meeting wasn't trying to trap them.

Meanwhile, X Account Autism Capital has described the new development as “the end of an era”, while another has turned to memory to raise the issue of fraudsters.

On the other side of the internet, community members are speculating about what billionaire Elon Musk is up to in the future. On Reddit, a user speculated that the platform might follow suit by selling X-only NFTs following the move. Another user backed up his opinion by bringing up Reddit's digital collections, which have successfully logged 10 million users into the NFT space.
