Art blocks, popular platform And in commonFor works of art on the chain, It announced on Wednesday that it has reached a long-term goal: to make most of its projects now accessible and viewable by browsing the Ethereum blockchain.
All Art Blocks projects have been created on Ethereum since the union kick off In the year In 2020, those pieces will always need a back-end generator provided by the company to be displayed online.
But now even the mechanisms needed to see and enjoy 90% of them are set up on-chain.
That means that as long as the Ethereum blockchain exists, ArtBlocks will continue to operate and host its work as a single company, but those artworks can still be viewed online.
Most of the Art Blocks pieces that can now only be seen on the chain were originally created with one of the two most commonly used programming tools: p5js and threejs. 10% of pieces that still require third-party help to view rely on other tools.
In a blog post today on Art Blocks' fourth year, company founder Eric Calderon called the success “a big step forward.”
“You're no longer dependent on Art Blocks or any other platform,” Calderon said. “These works represent a fundamental shift in how art can be created, collected and preserved.”
ArtBlocks says it will continue to rely on a central generator, the main way to view its units online. But enabling full access to these works across the chain remains critical to the company's long-term mission to create the infrastructure for “a new chapter in art history.”
