Worldcoin claims 4 million app downloads and 1 million active users

The iris-scan project WorldCoin has reached a new milestone, as the mobile World app has now been downloaded more than 4 million times, the project team reported in a blog post on November 1. If this number is finally confirmed by Coingecko, it will put the World App in sixth place on Coinco's list of most downloaded software wallets.

The WorldCoin development team, called Tools for Humanity, says it now has more than 1 million monthly users, double the number it had six months ago.

WorldCoin is a project that allows users to verify their humanity by scanning their irises. Once the user performs an iris scan, they receive a “world ID” that can be used to verify to apps that they are not a bot. Each user in the verification process receives 25 Worldcoin (WLD) tokens, currently worth approximately $46.50.

The project has become popular in markets such as Argentina, because some participants have registered and seen it as a quick way to make some extra money by selling the coins.

However, WorldCoin has also been criticized as a threat to privacy. Critics say it's too centralized and could lead to public disclosure of users' data.

To withdraw their WLD, Worldcoin users must download the World app to generate an account. In a Nov. 1 post, the team revealed that the app has now been downloaded more than 4 million times. This puts it above the Solana Phantom wallet but below the Bitcoin.com Bitcoin wallet on Coingecko's list of most popular wallets.

Some of the registered users seem to stick and continue using the app after downloading it. The app has reached 1 million monthly, 500,000 weekly and 100,000 daily active users. This is more than double the number of monthly active users from six months ago, the article said.

Despite these successes, the project continues to be criticized by some privacy advocates. On October 2, a parliamentary committee in Kenya ordered WorldCoin to stop operating in the country due to privacy concerns. Although the project was compiled by the order, it issued a statement saying that they have complied with all privacy laws in the country.
