But WorldCoin's goal of introducing Universal Basic Income (UBI) alongside its biometric identity system has invited its fair share of controversy, mostly centered around privacy concerns over metallic eye-scanning devices dubbed “Orbs.”

On January 31, Hong Kong's Office of the Personal Data Privacy Commissioner (PCPD) launched an investigation into Worldcoin's local operations, citing “serious risks to personal data privacy.” The PCPD said it executed warrants and entered six premises controlled by WorldCoin in Hong Kong.

Outside of Hong Kong, the project has drawn the attention of several buyers' regulators over privacy concerns, seeing the service completely shut down in Kenya and iris scanning stopped in India.

Regardless of these regulatory concerns, the global native token posted gains of over 141% in the past week, bought by a broader rally across the crypto sector.
