Worldcoin is launching its own 'human-centric' blockchain network

WorldCoin, an identity coin startup founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is advancing its “human-centered” approach to the Web 3 space with its new blockchain network World Chain.

On April 17, Worldcoin announced WorldChain, a new blockchain initiative designed to prioritize human users, improve efficiency, and increase real-world utility in Web3 applications.

WorldCoin has recently generated 10 million World IDs and completed 75 million transactions, reflecting the rapid expansion of the project. Its own network is designed to scale with the wider Ethereum network as layer 2 to meet the needs of the project.

Cointelegraph spoke with Thiago Sada, Head of Operations at WorldCoin, to better understand the project's intentions with the network and how it plans to keep humans at the center.

Sada says that technically Worldchain will act similarly to any L2 and Ethereum, the difference being that it prioritizes people over bots, while blockchains often experience congestion due to bot activity.

“Usually the way it works is every account is fighting for block space. Usually, because bots move so fast and can outnumber people, networks get flooded with all the bots' transactions, and people have leftovers – often they can't even get in.”

GlobalChain's solution attempts to solve this problem by supporting transactions completed by verified GlobalIdentity holders.

“It's going to be an open and permissioned network like any other, but we're prioritizing people's transactions so that their transactions can be verified and then the rest of the block space is just like any other blockchain.”

In addition, Sada explained how verified users get free gas allowances, reducing friction for newcomers. The protocol aims for an equilibrium where bots and power users eventually cover gas bills for normal users.

He explained how the WorldCoin Foundation gives verified people an “allowance”, which frees up two of their monthly transactions from gas.

“The idea with that is just to make it easier for people to get started, so someone doesn't have to go through the pain of solving and understanding all these things.”

The network is compatible with Ethereum and also cooperates with projects like Optimism and Base. Worldcoin expects to be fully launched in the summer with a developer preview expected soon.

This announcement comes on the heels of a series of changes the project has been implementing, including strengthening privacy checks to improve user data protection and making the platform available only to people over 18 years of age, as well as permanently deleting the user's iris code.

In the year On March 22nd, Worldcoin made its Orbi software open source and implemented a new “Personal Protection” privacy feature.

The moves follow global governments' scrutiny of their privacy practices, which has led to some temporary bans in countries such as Portugal, Kenya and Spain.

Responding to the investigation, Saba said that Worldcoin's pace was “fortunately” just a natural process of introducing a new protocol.

“When any project starts to become large-scale, it is the government's job to step in and make sure that everything the project says is true. And I think that's perfectly natural.
