X (Twitter) removes NFT profile pictures from support page

Social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter, has removed support for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from its premium subscription page.

As of late January 1st, X still offers profile picture support for NFTs. “As a premium subscriber, you can create and customize your profile to display the NFTs you hold on your account with a six-shaped profile picture,” the support page says. “After a temporary connection to your crypto wallet, which allows you to set the NFT as your profile picture, your digital asset will display a unique hexagonal shape that identifies you as the owner of the NFT.”

However, at the time of publication, NFTs have been removed from the X Premium support page.

In the year January 20, 2022 Twitter officially launches NFT profile pictures with verification mechanism. Paid subscribers who used NFTs as their user profile got a special hexagonal border on their avatar.

Similarly, on March 15, 2023, Meta removed support for NFT profile pictures on Facebook and Instagram, 10 months after the merger was announced. While he did not provide a specific explanation for the termination, Stephane Kasriel, head of business and financial technologies at Meta, said: “We are ending NFT support to focus on other ways to support creators, people and businesses.”

Shortly after the start of the crypto bear market, NFT trading volume fell by more than 98% in September 2022. During that time, NFT earned an average of just $285 per sale, compared to $2,000 in early January 2022.
