YGG Unveils Onchain Guilds on Coinbase's Base, Expanding Blockchain Ecosystem in the Philippines

Every story begins with a memorable scene or unique setting.

During the outbreak of Web 3 games in the Philippines, that scene played out in countless Filipino homes: Students and workers, locked in lockers, discovered that they could share a common value.

What started as a curious mix of gaming and crypto later exploded into a cultural phenomenon.

But this was only a symbolic testing ground. Fast forward to late 2024, and the scene has matured beyond those early game-finding days.

While the initial gold rush may have died down, something more important has taken root. The Philippines, which served as ground zero on the digital economy scale for this experiment, has been the most engaged market for Web 3 games for three consecutive years.

Pioneers over the years

Now, Yield Guild Games (YGG), the pioneer of the guild model that has brought thousands of players together into communities, is expanding its vision beyond gaming.

In an exclusive interview with Decryptsays Gabby Dizon, founder of Wild Guild Games, who has seen a wild idea grow into action with the ease of confidence.

“We've always had guild communities as part of YGG since day one,” explains Gaby Dizon. “We first started in Aksi. [with] We expanded the scholarship program, then to other games, and added search and reputation to that.

It is with this early model that YGG conceptualized Onchain Guilds, a platform for cooperatives to build and manage their reputations with verifiable records of their work and results on the blockchain.

Whether you're a gaming team, an artist, or a group of content creators, the platform provides tools to track contributions, manage shared assets, and track opportunities across YGG's network of partners.

Think of it as connecting like LinkedIn Discord, but with real testimonials that show what you've accomplished.

“The name is something everyone should see,” Dizon explained, explaining how teams can now track their success stories. “It's written in your wallet, so you own it, not a social network or another platform.”

Home base

Web3 Guild Protocol announced today at the YGG Play Summit that it will launch an onchain guilds platform on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer-2 network.

Designed to increase transaction speed and reduce costs while maintaining Ethereum's security and decentralization, Base was created using the Optimism Stack.

L2 enables developers to deploy decentralized applications more efficiently and users to connect to the Ethereum ecosystem at a lower cost.

This is especially important in the Philippines, where web3 gaming is not just a hobby, but a serious economic force and a source of livelihood for people earning an average annual income of between $3,000 and $12,000.

According to research from ConsenSys, the country has topped the global demand for Web 3 gaming for three years running, with an impressive 96% crypto awareness rate. Through YGG Pilipinas alone, the community counts 1.2 million members across social platforms.

And that's growing fast because YGG's vision extends beyond gaming, he says. Decrypt. Earlier this year, YGG launched its Future of Work unit, exploring how these same tools can help freelancers, content creators, and AI data tagging teams organize and build reputations together.

“People are starting to do things like AI companies are tagging data, contributing data to deep end networks that can make money,” he explains. “I think a lot of transactions online will eventually move through the chain.”

The decision to end the base's global tour in Manila – Latin America, Africa and India – highlights the role of the Philippines as a frontier market for Web3. stage”constructions” Digital ownership and verified credentials are making waves in developing economies where they are considered game changers.

Digital sports

For community members who actively participate in the popular Guild Advancement Program, YGG offers rewards as a way to enrich themselves.

Fame, Dizon notes, is a central feature of human interaction. Whether in Web2 or offline, when a person talks or interacts with a person or group, it often opens up how others perceive them, based on how they are perceived, what they have done or done.

Drawing parallels with traditional sports teams, Dizon explains how reputation works for Onchain Guilds.

“If you think about the LA Lakers, they have a certain name. They have had different members over the decades, but the team itself maintains the name: they have won championships, they have a winning record together.”

In some ways, the launch of Onchain Guilds on Base feels less like a product release and more like a coming of age for the Web3 community. As Dizon rightly puts it, with the characteristic optimism of someone who sees the future ahead of schedule: “It's a natural evolution of our mission.”

This, Dizon believes, is what YGG's Onchain Guilds are building for digital communities – a platform where they can collectively find and build value using blockchain technology.
