Asteroid mining could be big business in the future, if anyone figures out how to make it economically viable. For now, at least, you can mine bitcoins from digital space rocks in the mobile game SpaceY. And yes, you can cash out your earned BTC.
SpaceY—no, not SpaceX—is a simple and straightforward idle mining game in which you lead the adventures of a crew aboard a spaceship as they travel across the galaxy, searching for bitcoins and mining any resources they can find. Gradually improve your skills over time. Available on both iOS and Android.
At first you get a bit of storytelling and some attractive artwork, but the game quickly turns mindless and falls into the same loop of tapping a button to scan an asteroid, tap a button to mine, boost your ship, jump to the next one. sector, and repeats continuously.
Over time, your upgrade abilities will get stronger as you—again—tap buttons to make various ship upgrades. Yet somehow, the wait time for Bitcoin asteroids to scan seems to be long. This is where the game likes to throw “boosts” at you that speed things up. The free boost is modest, sure, but watching a video ad will boost your score for a few minutes.
What happens when you touch a gift box floating in view? Free in-game coins can be redeemed for Bitcoin, but only if you watch a full-screen video ad. Do you want to double the amount of mining coins while you are away? Watch another video ad. There are plenty of opportunities to watch video ads for a small profit, and to developer Fumb Games' credit, they are an option. But they lie.
I watched dozens of these ads, and felt FOMO as I returned to SpaceY over and over again over the course of a few days. But after 4.5 hours of combined gameplay, I only needed 208 satoshis—the smallest denomination of Bitcoin, or 1/100,000,000 BTC.
This costs only $0.14 as of this writing, which you can withdraw to a linked ZBD wallet and move from there. Granted, that's free money and I played most of it in my spare time. I don't recommend spending a certain amount of game time on a game that costs a few coins per hour.
Meanwhile, I find SpaceY more enjoyable than many of the Bitcoin-earning mobile games we've covered so far on DecryptGG, largely because video ads aren't forced on you. They'll help you stack more satoshis though, and SpaceY is a solid enough way to kill time.
