ZachXBT has recovered $177K NFT proceeds from the loot after a 9-month investigation.
Anonymous on-chain researcher ZackXBT recovered most of their money from the sale of rare DeGods non-fungible token (NFT) stolen in May 2023, after the original NFT holder fell victim to a phishing scam.
On February 24th on X, ZachXBT announced to his 505,200 followers the results of his nine-month investigation into DeGods #3251 NFT theft, which revealed that most of the funds have now been returned to the victim.
The NFT was sold in May 2023 for 99 Ethereum (ETH), which was roughly $177,000 at the time.
“I am happy to share that the stolen funds have now been returned to the victim for a good amount of money.”
ZachXBT received a message from the victim in May 2023, after the victim realized that his wallet had been leaked, he asked for ZachXBT's help in recovering his digital art.
ZachXBT tests can vary in complexity. He often uses direct diagrams to show his followers how phishing scams happen and track the movement of money through crypto mixers.
“Recovery is a long process but it happens and I am happy to share these success stories,” he said.
ZachXBT has revealed its plan to complete its pro bono blockchain investigation work in a short period of time.
He revealed this after receiving angry responses from X users as he repeatedly claimed to offer this service for free, but did not help them recover their stolen crypto.
“That's why I'm going to shut down all public goods soon,” he said.

ZachXBT has played an important role in various sectors of the crypto industry, helping individuals and national authorities identify crypto crimes.

Christophe Durand, deputy head of France's national cyber unit, told AFP he learned of the incident after following an investigation from ZachXBT on social media.
