A ton can help Defin get to the core: Report
An open network (TON) could be the key to unlocking the adoption of cryptocurrencies and decentralized technologies.
The TON blockchain virus is primarily from the messenger app Telegram and its more than 950 million users can access TON-based blockchain applications directly through the messenger application.
This flexibility could make TONE a catalyst for truly mainstream decentralized finance (DeFi) adoption, according to a GSR report on October 17, which states:
“While most of the attention around Ton has focused on apps in the gaming and social sectors, we believe the Ton+ Telegram ecosystem has huge potential that will ultimately give DeFi a huge opportunity beyond its core crypto-native audience. It has not been getting the attention it deserves.”
The forecast raises a promising sign for the DeFi sector, which is carving out other crypto niches.
Between January 2022 and September 2023, tokens associated with DeFi protocols decreased by 72%, memecoins decreased by 35%, and tokens associated with smart contracts decreased by 48%, according to Artemis data.

Ton has surpassed Ethereum and L2s in active addresses
Thanks to continued adoption, Ton has surpassed the most popular blockchains in terms of monthly active addresses.
The report said.
“Monthly active addresses on the network grew from around 100,000 in September 2023 – when Telegram introduced its integrated wallet – to 9.9 million in September 2024.”
This ton puts it ahead of Ethereum's 5.5 million active addresses registered by September 2024 and other Ethereum layer-2 (L2) networks and sidechains such as Arbitrum, OP Mainnet and Polygon POS chain.
However, the report added that Coinbase's Base blockchain and Solana still have the highest number of monthly active users.

Tap-to-find games like Hamster Kombat, a Telegram-based clicker game based on viral hits, are attracting new mainstream users to blockchain.
Within five months of the game's launch, Hamster Kombat surpassed 300 million users as the game began preparations for what it called the “biggest airdrop in crypto history.”
According to the report, this makes Hamster Kombat the second most played mobile game in the world, close to Metro Surfer's 304 million downloads.
According to GSR data, Telegram is currently the eighth-most popular social media platform worldwide with over 950 million monthly active users. Telegram is a critical success factor behind these games.
Others believe in the power of Telegram. In particular, Telegram could be a “Trojan horse” for mass crypto adoption, according to Justin Yun, director of investments at the Ton Foundation.
He told Cointelegraph.
In the year Bringing 500 million people on the chain by 2028 – that's our goal – will require blockchain-related issues without the user being aware of the front-end.
A viral Web3 clicker game can be included in the Guinness World Record for being the first YouTube channel to gain more than 10 million subscribers in one week (six days, 13 hours and 15 minutes).
