Coinbase gets AFSL license to bring ‘Everything Exchange’ to Australia
Coinbase Australia has received an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL) along with a Retail Derivatives License from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), making it the first crypto exchange to achieve this milestone.
The AFSL allows businesses to offer regulated financial services in Australia. It covers activities such as providing financial advice, trading financial products, investment schemes and other specified services.
AFSL holders must meet their reporting and compliance obligations, maintain adequate resources and comply with the standards of Australia's financial regulatory framework.
The approval reflects years of investment in the market and reinforces Coinbase's commitment to strong consumer protection and regulatory compliance, John O'Loghlen, Coinbase Regional Managing Director APAC & Country Director Australia, said in a statement.
“Accepting AFSL is a natural next step in our journey,” said O'Loughlen. “This license will subject Coinbase Australia to the ethical, transparency, governance and consumer protection standards applicable to traditional financial service providers and should be valid.”
The license comes ahead of new regulatory requirements and will allow Coinbase to expand its all-things exchange offering in the country.
Australians will have access to crypto and equity forever as Coinbase moves to offer a wider range of financial products on one platform, according to the company.
