Defi Protocols Are Moving Away From Discord As Fraud Risks Increase

Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols are abandoning public Discord servers, arguing that the platform has become more of a liability than a community center.

The change drew attention on Wednesday after DeFi lending protocol Morpho said it had moved its public Discord server to read-only mode, instead directing users to alternative support channels. The move reflects concerns that Discord has become a preferred hunting ground for scammers targeting crypto users.

The concern is not limited to morpho. According to 0xngmi, the anonymous founder of Defy Data Platform, Defy is quietly reducing its reliance on Discord in favor of more controlled communication tools.

Many developers say the goal is to move away from always-on chat rooms to structured support systems designed to maximize user engagement.

Why DeFi Groups Are Backing Away From Discord

A major issue cited by developers and data providers is that Discord has become nearly impossible to secure, and phishing is a major problem.

Morpho founder Merlin Egalite said leaving Discord was “not an easy choice,” but added that despite the heavy monitoring and protections, users are being phished when they need help.

The Morpho protocol has been testing tools like intercom, which Egalite has made easier to support with features like ticket management and AI responses.

Similar concerns were raised by 0xngmi. In a post, Discord's founder argued that their platform had switched to live support chat and email tickets, arguing that it was impossible to protect Discord users.

“Even if you block scammers instantly, they will still DM users directly to scam them,” he said.

Community leaders rallied behind Discord's exit.

Industry operators and members of the public also weighed in on the issue. Richard Rodairos, talent partner at Dragonfly, says that public Discord servers have become “one of the lowest-signaling platforms in the space.”

He argued that users and developers would benefit more from clear documentation, asynchronous support, and reliable communications. “Remove most of the misunderstandings in crypto. It will really make the industry good in the long run,” Rodairos wrote.

Mark Zeller, founder of the Avechan Initiative, says Discord is “full of scammers” and users who ask questions are often targeted by fake admins. He called Morphone's decision positive and urged Ave Labs to consider exiting the social platform.

Nifty Gateway co-founder Duncan Coke Foster shared that fixing Discord was the worst part of running his previous company and took a toll on his mental health. He called Morphone's move “clever.”

Not everyone wants to leave Discord behind.

While some believe there are limitations to Discord, other community members have argued that abandoning Discord would jeopardize one of the sector's core characteristics: open, peer-to-peer collaboration.

One of the main appeals of DeFi, according to X-user Lamaontebrinck, is the ability to “pop into Project Discord” to share experiences, provide feedback, and follow development discussions. Community members expressed their hope that Discord's exit will not become a trend.

Others say that the issue is more about the performance than the stage. X user nft_dreww argued that all forums attract scammers and that well-functioning Discord servers with proper security can stay safe and active.

A similar comment was made by X user walter_su11evan, stating that abandoning Discord is a matter of platform capability, as many projects continue to operate healthy and well-organized communities.
