Freedom Factory Unveils Ethereum Mobile Hardware For The Ethereum Ecosystem

Freedom Factory – the team behind the ethOS operating system – has unveiled a new mobile device called “dGen1” – an onchain device that can be used to interact with Web3 applications, use decentralized financial protocols and sign transactions on Ethereum.

The device is built on ethOS – a fork of the Android operating system – and features a built-in web browser, touchscreen, audio speaker and a screen that displays separate transaction metadata. However, dGen1 does not appear to have telecommunication capabilities.

A key feature of dGen1 is its on-device light node client – meaning future users won't need to rely on third-party Remote Procedure Call (RPC) nodes to connect to the blockchain.

According to Freedom Factory, the device will begin shipping in spring 2025, making Freedom Factory the latest company to join the list of Web3 developers getting into mobile hardware. This list includes Solana from the upcoming Finder smartphone and Mysten Labs' SuiPlay0X1 handheld gaming device.

Crypto companies are exploring hardware to drive blockchain adoption

On September 3, Myston Labs – the company behind the Sui (SUI) blockchain – announced that it was taking pre-orders for the SuiPlay0X1 device – a gaming handheld similar to the Steam Deck and other mobile gaming computers.

The $599 device is slated for release in the first half of 2025 and will be compatible with Steam's online game store and blockchain games built on Sui.

At the recent Future of Blockchain Summit in Dubai, Christian Thompson, Chief Information Officer of Mysten Labs, told Cointelegraph that blockchain allows game developers to experiment on Web3 and attract users.

In the same month, Solana recently announced its flagship smartphone device. A Solana Labs spokesperson called the upcoming phone a “reward magnet” and promised that the phone won't rely on memecoins.

This represents a departure from Solana's previous Saga phone – which was sold as a result of the memecoin airdrop. Users are guaranteed 30 million BONK tokens if they purchase the smartphone, and following a 1,100% increase in the price of Memcoin, this makes the $1,000 phone an attractive purchase.
