The Ethereum Foundation Outlines Its Top Priorities For 2026.

The Ethereum Foundation has announced that it is targeting faster transactions, smart wallets, better on-chain transactions, and quantum security measures as “protocol priorities” by 2026.

In a statement published on Wednesday, the Ethereum Foundation listed a number of goals, including increasing the gas limit – the maximum amount of work a block can hold – “to and above” 100 million, which has been a big topic of discussion among the Ethereum community by 2025.

Some members of the Ethereum community think that the gas limit will increase significantly this year. In the year In November 2025, Ethereum Master Anthony Sassano said that the goal of increasing the Ethereum gas limit to 180 million by 2026 is a baseline rather than a best-case scenario.

“Post-quantum readiness” is the focus for Ethereum

The foundation identified the upgrade of the Glumsterdam network as a major priority, set for the first half of 2026. The trillion-dollar security initiative has focused on “post-quantum preparedness” as a priority.

On January 24, Ethereum researcher Justin Drake said in a post on X that the foundation has “established a new post-quantum (PQ) group.”

“Today marks a shift in Ethereum Foundation's long-term Quantum strategy,” Drake said.

The Ethereum Foundation says it will focus on improving user experience in 2026.

The goal is seamless, trust-reduced L2-L2 interaction, and we're getting closer every day. The continued improvement of faster L1 validations and shorter L2 settlement times directly supports this.

According to the foundation, 2025 will be one of the “most effective years”, referring to two major network reforms, Pictra and Fusaka, and the community will increase the gas limit between 30 million and 60 million between the reforms, for the first time since 2021.

Buterin's big plans for Ethereum and AI

“It took us a while to get the announcement out because we were developing the biggest curriculum yet,” Ethereum Foundation Mario Havel told XPost on Wednesday.

It comes just days after Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin shared his latest vision of Ethereum's intersection with artificial intelligence on February 10th.

Buterin says his broad vision for the future of AI is to empower rather than replace humans, but the short term includes many “ordinary” ideas.
