As the crypto bull run heats up, crypto noobs and old-timers scramble to keep up with the ever-changing narratives every week. But Gabby Dizon, co-founder and CEO of Wild Guild Games, isn't buying the whole “chase narrative.”

“I don't believe in chasing narratives,” Dizon told Hall of Flames at the YGG Play Summit in the Philippines.

“Of course there are narratives that you follow, like late to memory. I'm involved in a small way to understand how people who trade Memcoin think, but seriously I don't trade,” he says.

Sooner or later, Dizon, the narrative is building a “conviction” that will “turn attention” back to the Web3 gaming industry.

“We have to be ready when that happens,” he said.

Generation Guild Games is a Guild protocol focused on coordinating players around the world to earn rewards through in-game games by the end of 2020.

Dizon, who comes from a gaming dev background in traditional gaming, jumped into the blockchain game after “getting into Ethereum and smart contracts in 2017” and NFTs in 2018.

Dizon felt he missed the boat when he jumped into Web2 mobile free-to-play games in 2014, so he wanted to be an early developer in Web3 gaming.

“I started my game company in 2014, and the market was already kind of midway. It was already starting to mature, and I felt like I was late, I should have been earlier,” says Dizon.

What led Gabby Dizon to X fame?

Dizon has owned the X label for 15 years, but admits that its following was very modest during its first decade in the traditional Web2 gaming industry.

“From 2008 to 2018, I have collected a total of 2,000 followers,” he says with a laugh.

“2018 and 2019 didn't change that much, but the market started to pick up in 2020, so that's when the number of followers started to increase,” he explains.

He says it was like a domino effect: his follower count skyrocketed by 40x, the kind that would make any memecoin trader jealous.

“When people got interested in NFTs, people started getting interested in Web3 games and I see a bull market going up to 80,000 in 2021,” he says.

“He was posting something that a lot of people were interested in,” Dizon says modestly.

Dizon now has 137,800 followers on X, but says that having more followers causes a fair amount of unnecessary stress.

“It's weird being a celebrity on Twitter because I use it like a normal person,” he says.

“Oh, what kind of crap did I post six years ago that I can delete today?” He joked that he had an idea.

“I don't remember any cancellations,” he adds, laughing. But I haven't seen everything. I was wondering: Did I post something particularly stupid?”

What content does Gabby Dizon create?

“I just post what I think about the market,” Dizon said.

We post a lot of support for the games we make with YGG Esports. I'd say I've been posting a lot about NFTs and gaming in general.

Every now and then, you'll see Dizon drop subtle hints that his teenage son is a bit of a crypt degene.

As the crypto industry continues to grow, Dizon says it's becoming increasingly difficult for key opinion leaders to cover every segment, forcing them to narrow their focus a bit.

“The space in 2020, 2021 was very small, where you could see everything that happened in crypto,” says Dizon.

Gabi Dizon Predictions?

Dizon thinks that with all the hype around the crypto market, gaming usage is going to be tough for the next year.

“I think we're going to start seeing games that consistently get over a million players a month,” Dizon predicted, “trying to be conservative here because it's a big jump right now.”

“Probably the major crypto games are now doing a few 100,000 players per month,” he says.

He pointed out that some of the “best games in the world” are currently garnering “tens of millions”, if not “over 100 million users”.

Dizon also expects to see players “trading more with the property, maybe more.”
