Ethereum Economic Zone targets layer-2 scrap

Ethereum's economic zone framework targets the L2 division
Gnosis, Zysk and the Ethereum Foundation presented the Ethereum Economic Zone at EthCC 2026 in Cannes. They introduced a packet framework that connects multiple Layer-2 networks under a common framework. The project aims to reduce the fragmentation of more than 20 operational Ethereum L2s.
Those networks currently account for about $40 billion in assets, but they operate as independent systems. Each L2 maintains separate liquidity pools, deployments, and bridging infrastructure. As a result, users and developers visit disconnected environments.
Gnosis co-founder Frederik Ernst addressed this issue during the conference. “Ethereum doesn't have elasticity, it has volatility,” she said. She added that each new L2 creates another independent fluid pool and bridge.
Ethereum's Economic Zone smart contracts allow for batch and network synchronous calls. It allows atomic transactions to be carried out in networks in one process. The framework also uses ETH as the default gas token.
Developers can remove specific bridge protocols under this framework. The system maintains security with the Ethereum base chain. Proponents of the project say the design will restore cohesion between the parcels.
Zisk developer Jordi Bailina joined Ernst during the presentation. They described the framework as aligned with Ethereum's scaling roadmap. The collaboration receives joint financial support from the Ethereum Foundation.
Zisk CEO Maria Roberts said during the event. “The Zone will facilitate a new era of blockchain innovation,” she said. She added that developers can “easily” integrate existing apps into the framework.
The conference highlights institutional focus and market intelligence
Early partners include Ave, Centrifuge and Switzerland-based EEZ Alliance. The organizers confirmed that these groups were joined at launch. Coverage from The Block and CoinDesk reported their participation.
Ethereum's migration to cheaper L2 networks has reduced the main fee's revenue. According to recent market data, ETH is trading around $2,000. The network has secured around $53 billion in total value of DeFi locked in.
Stablecoins on Ethereum are worth about $163 billion. Market data cited by Pemex listed these figures. Organizers positioned the EEZ as a structural reform for capital flow efficiency.
The organizers of EthCC have described 2026 as “the year of professionalization of Ethereum and the wider crypto ecosystem.”
The conference moved to Cannes for this edition. The event featured forums focused on the institution.
Kaiko launched the Agora platform during the conference. The platform is aimed at professional market participants, the organizers said. They highlighted discussions of infrastructure and market structure.
A separate report cited Caico's findings on gaps in market structure. A report says there is still a marketing gap in Alameda. Conference sessions will address issues of transparency and fairness.
The Ethereum Economic Zone Framework was officially released during the EthCC. Scheme representatives confirmed that on-boarding discussions with other L2 groups are ongoing. The launch took place on March 29 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.
